About

The Brayton Fire Department Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting the volunteer firefighters who protect 1,300 residents across 36 square miles of rural Iowa farmland. Our service area spans three townships and the City of Brayton, with mutual aid agreements extending coverage to an additional 12 townships and the City of Exira. As a small agricultural community with limited tax base and limited fire hydrant access, we depend on donations and grants to equip our volunteers with the tools they need to respond when neighbors call for help — from aging apparatus replacement to modern breathing equipment that keeps firefighters safe during structure fires.

What the Association Does

The Brayton Fire Department Association exists to do what tax dollars alone cannot. We raise funds, pursue grants, and manage the financial infrastructure that allows the volunteer fire department to operate and improve over time. Recent priorities have included SCBA equipment, extrication tools, and bunker gear — the essential kit that keeps firefighters safe and effective on scene.

The association is a separate 501(c)(3) entity (EIN 41-2956021, effective December 5, 2025) that exists specifically to support the department’s equipment and training needs through accountable, transparent stewardship of donor and grant funds.

To protect life and property in the Brayton community through skilled volunteer firefighting, emergency response, and community engagement — and to ensure our volunteers have the equipment they need to do it safely.
